I’ve been sitting with something lately, and to be honest, it feels a little uncomfortable. But maybe that’s the point.
Here’s the truth: life has never been easier in so many ways. With two clicks we can order groceries, dinner, or a new pair of shoes and have them on our doorstep in hours. Technology has made almost everything more convenient – and I love it. Convenience has been a gift, especially in those early years of motherhood when I was just trying to get through a grocery run without a meltdown in aisle three.
But here’s what I’ve noticed: comfort, while wonderful, can numb the very muscles we need to grow.
When we avoid the hard moments, we also miss out on the transformation that only comes through challenge.
What Happens When We Avoid the Hard Stuff
A few years ago, I realized that by outsourcing everything for ease, my kids weren’t learning simple but essential things like how to budget, where food comes from, or why we make the choices we do in the store. Skipping those “messy” moments might have saved me time, but it also skipped their chance to grow.
It made me wonder: where else in my life was I choosing comfort over transformation?
Sometimes the Experts Are Wrong for You
Recently, I sat down with one of my most trusted advisors to talk through a big decision. I laid out the numbers, the vision, all of it. His advice? Wait three years. Don’t start anything new until the world feels more stable.
And I get it. He’s smart, seasoned, risk-aware. But here’s the thing: if I had listened to that same advice eight years ago, I never would have left my salary job to start my business. That decision didn’t make sense on paper either, but it changed everything.
Sometimes the right thing is the illogical thing. Sometimes the future is built in uncertainty, not after it.
A Framework for Transformation
If you’re in that space where part of you wants to move but another part is scared, here’s a rhythm that has helped me over and over again. I call it the 4R Framework:
1. Resistance — Instead of seeing resistance as failure, notice it as an invitation. That voice in your head that says, What if I fail? is just your brain trying to protect you. Thank it, but don’t let it stop you.
2. Repetition — Transformation isn’t built in one big leap. It’s built in small reps, over and over again. Whether it’s sending the proposal, showing up on video, or simply lacing up your shoes for a run — you build belief through consistent practice.
3. Relationship + Reflection — Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. We need people — coaches, friends, mentors — who can reflect back to us how far we’ve come and cheer us on when we want to quit.
4. Reward — Without reward, the process feels like grind. Your reward could be alignment, growth, freedom, or simply knowing you’re building something that matters. Name it. Celebrate it. Let it fuel your next step.
Choosing Discomfort on Purpose
If the voices around you are telling you to freeze, to wait, to shrink… pause and ask yourself: Is that true for me?
You don’t need to abandon your dream just because the world feels wobbly. Sometimes the bravest, most aligned move is to step forward anyway.
So where is resistance rising for you right now? What’s one small rep you can do today to prove to yourself that you’re moving forward? Who’s your support crew? And what reward are you really chasing?
The world doesn’t need you to sit still. It needs you to lead, to create, to disrupt, and to grow something that lasts.
Your future self will thank you for moving (even a little).
